National Australia Bank, Money Laundering Risk Officer

We partnered with NAB Talent Acquisition to recruit Paul Jevtovic, the ex-CEO of AUSTRAC and Head of Financial Crime Threat Mitigation (FCTM) for Asia Pacific with HSBC.  Commencing in September 2021, once announced it was reported: “National Australia Bank Limited has pulled off a remarkable coup confirming the hiring of former AUSTRAC CEO Paul Jevtovic (AFR 9th June, 2021). 

 

Westpac, Global Transaction Services, (GTS) Westpac Institutional Bank

 

Working with the General Manager and Head of GTS, we managed an exercise to fill key skill and experience gaps in the senior management team. The following are a sample of appointments made since early 2018:

Macquarie Bank, BFS Division

 

We conducted a search taking in domestic and key international markets aimed at attracting someone with a track record for organisation transformation and successful engagement with financial advisors. After an extensive process, we facilitated the appointment of senior executive based in the US from within Merrill Lynch’s Ultra High Net Worth business. The client described it as their best-ever hire.

 

ANZ, Head of Finance and Head of Middle Office, Financial Markets

 

Briefed to find a Head of Finance for ANZ’s Global Financial Market business, we conducted a search focused on both local talent and Australian expatriates based overseas but open to returning home.  Candidates were identified and interviewed in New York, London, Hong Kong and Singapore.  The Head of Finance role was appointed out of New York, an Australian looking to return home. A London-based executive was appointed to set up a new Middle Office capability - a first for the organisation. 

 

National Housing Finance and Investment Corporation (NHFIC)

 

Modelled on a successful system operating in the United Kingdom for many years, the NHFIC was a federal government initiative aimed at providing a more efficient funding mechanism for community housing providers.  Distributed via a range of state and local government agencies, as well as through approved developers, the organisation essentially unlocked the potential of housing projects that might not otherwise have been completed.

 

Ellington Savage was chosen to recruit the management team for this entirely new enterprise, drawing talent from commercial property providers to lead specialised functions in relationship management, deal origination, credit assessment and bond issuance.

We partnered with the Chief Executive and the leadership team to find the right business leaders to reshape (the then} Fairfax Media as it grappled with the disruption that digitalization was bringing to print media.  The range of work here was extensive – touching on existing digital business assets as well as assisting with the building out of agencies that leveraged the powerful footprint and customer data held by the organisation. 

 

Ellington Savage found talent to support many initiatives, including the recruitment of its GM of Finance; the Chief Executive, Events and assignments underpinning the preparation of Domain for its separation and IPO.

 

Seeing Machines

This high technology organisation is one of the world’s leading developers of driver fatigue monitoring systems based upon artificial intelligence and machine learning.  Ellington Savage has worked with them extensively to appoint functional heads to transform its operations and go-to-market strategies.  Appointments have included their CEO, CFO, COO along with heads of business lines, senior engineering specialists and product marketing specialists.

 

Geoscape

Ellington Savage worked with the board to appoint its Chief Executive Officer to lead a business transformation in response to new market entrants and the disruption that artificial intelligence had caused to its core operating model and foundation products.

 

Brambles

Ellington Savage built out the Strategy team for Brambles globally, recruiting senior executives within the Americas and Europe as well as in Australia.  This was built off a reputation earned in recruiting several executives within component business such as Chep, where we assisted in the appointment of members of its leadership team and supported initiatives such as the creation of robotic repair centres – a first for Chep globally.

 

State Government

As a member of the panel, we have been invited to assist several agencies with their senior and specialised appointments.  Assignments have been diverse and mostly required searching into the commercial sector for executives to step into significant government remits, though we have also covered senior policy roles where talent has been identified from within.

 

Example assignments include recruiting heads of Human Resources for NSW TCorp, DPIE, Customer Service and The Sydney Opera House.  Agencies such as Treasury and TCorp have also engaged us to recruit specialised financial markets and investment management professionals.

We are very proud to have recruited the first female NSW Government Architect in its 200 year history, Ms Abbie Galvin.

 

Fortescue Metals Group

 

In a period where the resources sector was struggling to meet demand for engineers, local candidates were scarce and highly paid.  We identified a market arbitrage in the US, where infrastructure build was at an historic low post GFC, and highly experienced candidates were facing significant job insecurity. We launched an international search and identified over 30 potential candidates, mostly in the US, but also in the UK and Asia.  We travelled to interview these candidates and were able to recruit a number of Project Controllers and Civil Engineers who brought deep and relevant experience for less than the salaries on offer locally.
